Mum’s the word | Past to present

During the 16th century, the fourth Sunday during Lent was known as Laetare Sunday and was a day of celebration, a day of relaxation from the decrees of Lent and a day of hope with Easter at last within sight.

This was also a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their ‘mother’ church (either where they were baptised, or the church in the family parish). This became known as ‘Mothering Sunday’, as children and young people who were in service as household servants, were given the day off so they could visit their families. Children would pick wild flowers along the way, to place in the church or give to their mothers. Over the years, this religious tradition has evolved into the secular celebration we know today as Mother’s Day.

In addition to the traditional gesture of giving flowers, gifts today extend to chocolates and jewellery, spa days and cosmetic products. It’s big business too. Latest research from Mintel forecasts Brits are expected to splash out £600 million on Mother’s Day this year, an increase of 3.4% compared to the £580 million we spent on our mums as a nation in 2017.

Besides being the best human being in the world, your mum is of course truly unique and her interests are sure to be varied. This year we’re focusing on foodies – creative, culinary mums who love to bake and banquet (and who love to make the house smell amazing too!).

Here are 6 of the best gorgeous gourmet-based gifts to serve to your mum this year

Too cheesy? Never. If your mum enjoys the finer (full fat) things in life, how about giving her a cheese and Prosecco gift set from organic cheesemakers Godminster Farm in Somerset? We all know cheese and wine go together, so Godminster have gone one better and carefully paired two of their award-winning cheddars with Il Colle Prosecco, a fresh and fruity fizz which is made in the hills of Treviso, Italy by a family run business (of course).

This beautifully packaged set includes one of their iconic heart shaped vintage organic cheddars and an individual oak-smoked truckle. The smooth creaminess and rich smokiness of these tasty cheeses pair together beautifully with the Prosecco, making this a gift she’ll love and (possibly) not want to share!

Or is she most in her element with a good brew? How about delighting her with this Mother’s Day Gift Selection from Bettys famous tea rooms? This bundle of delicious teatime treats includes: a rich and fruity Simnel cake, warming Yorkshire gingerbread, a caddy of Bettys famous ‘Tea Room Blend Tea’ and a centennial celebration Bettys china mug to enjoy it in. You can never have too many mugs (or hugs).
